I spoke with Erin at Westwind to try to understand the process better, and didn’t come away much more enlightened. I don’t like the idea of giving away my right to vote by signing a proxy form (because the form does not allow me to direct the proxy how to vote), and if I’m planning to attend in person to vote, then there seems no reason to return a proxy form.
However, it seems that Westwind is using the number of returned proxy forms to determine a quorum (that is, not accounting for the numbers of people who show up in person). Erin told me that the likely reason was because they’d received so few returned proxy forms that it was, practically speaking, nearly impossible that enough people would show up in person to achieve quorum (which is why I wasn’t counted when I arrived, and was told there would be no vote).
I’m not sure what feedback the Board provided, but two obvious improvements would be:
– Allow the homeowner signing the proxy form to direct the proxy how to vote (didn’t this used to be the case?).
– Wait till homeowners actually arrive in person to make the call about whether or not quorum was achieved. Because they didn’t do so last time, maybe the Board should ask Westwind to shoulder some of the cost for the second mailing (which is what I would propose if I were on the Board; maybe I’ll finally run again this year….).
In the interest of transparency, can the Board identify which areas are “major safety issues” that will be repaired? I’ve been waiting years for the Board to take action, so I’m wondering if the upcoming repairs will address the areas I have also noted.
I took a walk up the North Y to check out SEMSWA’s work, and after all of the back-and-forth, the end result is worthy of a “job well done” to both SEMSWA’s workers and the Board members and neighbors who took a stand against the original proposal.
The new path that has gone in (concrete, not gravel) looks professional, well constructed and mostly out of sight. Ironically, preservation of the existing vegetation has served to keep the access road mostly hidden from view until you’re almost upon it.
This is a textbook example of creative compromise resulting in an unqualified success. Thank you again to all involved for pushing back to make sure SEMSWA took good care of our common property. Go take a stroll to check it out!
Hi neighbors, I came to an agreement with the Board to take responsibility for taking the clubhouse trash cans to the curb every week as a way to avoid the cost and negative aesthetics of having a dumpster in the clubhouse parking lot. Call me the “Trash Tsar.” If you have any trash-related questions or notice anything amiss, feel free to reach out to me directly at mike@strick.land.
I’m also against this proposal. A dumpster would be an eyesore. If the problem is not enough trash can space, then get additional containers from HBS. If the problem is having someone responsible to move the HBS containers to the street ahead of trash day, I am happy to volunteer to handle that duty. BUT ABSOLUTELY NO DUMPSTER PLEASE!
Reposting from another thread, since no one from the Board has replied:
Thanks for setting up the meeting with SEMSWA for us homeowners. When will a decision be made, and how will that decision be made? Since they were able to come up with multiple options, I hope that the decision will be to use the option that is least invasive and destructive to our common property.
A very large special assessment like that seems like it should be reserved (no pun intended) for an actual expense, rather than to simply fund our reserves. We’ll be a “no” vote, if it goes to a vote.
Hey Suzanne, I never heard anything. We had planned to have a garage sale last weekend (May 21), but Mother Nature did not approve. I’ll try to remember to reach out to you when we decide on a new date, but with swim team starting, I’m not sure when that will be…

The amount of time that the swim team takes away pool usage from the community is very low in percentage terms, especially considering the fact that the weekday morning times would otherwise not be available to the community anyway (and thus shouldn’t be factored into any comparison).
Bearing this in mind, the high value that the swim team brings to our community (teaching kids valuable life skills like learning to swim at a very low cost to entry) far outweighs the limited inconvenience that a very small number of people might face.
